Do You Want Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring in Minneapolis?
There’s no doubt about it—hardwood is beautiful. As stunning as it is, it also comes with a lot of drawbacks, particularly when it comes to maintenance and durability. Of all the flooring materials, wood requires the most time and energy to keep it looking its best. Over the years, it can become damaged by scratches, dents, water damage, discoloration, creaking, and warping. Some of these issues can be repaired by sanding, staining, and refinishing, but others are more permanent.
If your wood floors are looking worse for wear and you’ve refinished them more times than you can count, consider replacing them with luxury vinyl plank (LVP). Luxury vinyl planks are, as the name indicates, planks made primarily out of vinyl. These planks have four layers:
- A thick layer of vinyl: This layer makes up most of the plank. It has some flexibility but overall is quite rigid.
- An engineered design: On top of the vinyl layer is a sheet that is engineered to look like wood or, depending on the product, natural stone tile.
- Thin transparent protective film: Though thin, this layer is strong enough to protect the plank against tearing.
- Aluminum oxide finish: This top layer prevents small scratches that come with regular wear and tear.
LVP is the best way to get floors that look and feel like wood without actually purchasing the real thing. Whether you’re looking to replace the flooring in residential or commercial spaces, our LVP flooring installation service is a perfect choice.
Our LVP Flooring Installation Service
At 651 Carpets, we’re a leading company in LVP flooring installation. No matter what kind of project you’re planning, we can help make your design ideas a reality. While some luxury vinyl plank products are designed to be relatively easy to install on your own, the process can still be complicated for those who are not familiar with it. Plus, the installation can easily take 48 hours or more to complete. If you don’t have the time to get this project done on your own, our LVP installation service is the way to go.
Our installation process varies slightly from client to client, but you can typically expect us to take the following steps during your service with us:
- The design phase: This is the fun part—choosing the color and finish of the luxury vinyl plank that’s right for your space! Our extensive catalog will provide a wide range of options for you, so you’re bound to find a product that’s the right fit for your home. We’ll also take the dimensions of your home so we know exactly how much product you’ll need.
- The preparation phase: Depending on the current state of your space, different preparation steps may be required. One of the perks of LVP is its ease of installation. It can be installed over a variety of different surfaces, as long as the surface is flat. If you currently have baseboards installed, these will need to be removed for the installation.
- The installation phase: Once the surface has been prepped, we’ll begin installing the planks. Installation is fairly easy and straightforward but gets more complicated when we reach the walls and doorways. This is the point at which professional installation really becomes worth it.
Benefits of Having Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring in Minneapolis:
It may surprise you to learn that installing LVP is quite popular in Minneapolis. Though vinyl floors have been around for many years, they were originally very thin and had a sticker-like appearance. Due to recent changes in technology, vinyl plank floors have made great strides and are known for their benefits. Due to its thickness and realistic appearance, LVP has become a popular alternative to hardwood. Other types of flooring that are commonly used by homeowners and commercial property owners today include:
- Laminate
- Ceramic tile
- Porcelain tile
- Carpet
- Hardwood
Luxury vinyl plank stands out from all of the above due to its high durability, low maintenance needs, and water resistance.
Water Resistant
If there’s one thing that ruins wood more quickly than anything else, it’s water. The impact that water has on wood will vary depending on whether it’s hardwood or softwood, but in the end, all wood is susceptible to cracking, expanding, and wood rot.
Love the look of wood but worry about how it’ll fare in the event of a plumbing problem, or in your bathroom? LVP is a great alternative. Although all vinyl plank products are, at a minimum, water resistant, luxury vinyl flooring is fully waterproof. This means that you won’t have to worry about soggy clothes and boots ruining your mudroom, or your young child’s overly active baths leading to water damage.
Durable
Though it has the appearance of realistic wood, LVP will not scratch or dent as easily as hardwood. This makes it great for high-traffic areas, such as living rooms and kitchens. Pet owners with LVP don’t have to worry about their furry friend running around when he’s due for a nail clipping, or kids’ toys being dragged across the floor.
Although LVP is the most durable of almost all flooring types (except maybe concrete, but who wants concrete flooring in their home anyway?), it isn’t completely immune to scratches, if enough force is applied. Plus, unlike hardwood, LVP can’t be sanded down and refinished. So, while it’s unlikely you’ll get any scratches, keep in mind that it’s not an impossibility.
Easy to Maintain
At 651 Carpets, we’re the first to argue for the benefits of carpet in both homes and commercial spaces. However, there’s no doubt that carpet requires more time to clean and maintain than LVP. Spilled wine, pet accidents, and pet hair aren’t the easiest to get out of carpet but can be mopped and vacuumed up from LVP in no time at all.

Minneapolis LVP Flooring Installation FAQs
How Much Does LVP Flooring Installation Cost?
As much as we’d love to be able to provide you with a standard quote for LVP flooring installation, there are too many factors that go into pricing to provide a definitive answer. The cost will depend on the size of the space, the type of LVP you choose, and a wide range of additional factors.
National statistics estimated that in 2021, luxury vinyl plank flooring cost between $2 to $10 per square foot of product. Therefore, for the product alone, a 500-square foot room could cost anywhere from $1000 to $5000. That being said, product prices are constantly fluctuating due to supply chain disruptions and shortages. Including labor costs, you could expect the installation project to cost between $1000 and $10,000, but again, this depends greatly on the size of your room and the product chosen.

Is There A Difference Between Standard Vinyl Flooring and Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring?
Absolutely. When we talk about luxury vinyl plank, we’re talking about a type of flooring that is similar to laminate flooring, in that it comes in individual planks that can be locked together. The only similarity between these two products is that they’re both made out of vinyl.
Standard vinyl is made to mimic the appearance of wood or stone tile, but you and your guests won’t be fooled by it for a moment. In contrast, LVP is engineered and embossed to very closely resemble wood. Unless they look closely, your friends and family won’t be able to tell your floors aren’t made out of hardwood. Standard vinyl is also much thinner and less durable. This is reflected in its price, as it tends to cost between $0.50 and $2 per square foot.
Do I Need Underlay for Luxury Vinyl Plank Flooring?
To install LVP, all you really need is a flat surface. LVP can be installed on top of existing vinyl flooring, hardwood, and concrete. However, adding underlay before installing LVP is still a good idea to improve your overall comfort. Although LVP is relatively thick, you’ll still be able to feel the difference between LVP on top of underlay and LVP directly on top of a concrete subfloor.
What Are The Disadvantages Of Vinyl Plank Flooring?
As convincing as luxury vinyl plank flooring is at mimicking the appearance of wood, it will never quite be able to look identical to the real thing. If you’re really set on getting the look of hardwood in your home, then LVP may not be the flooring material for you. Consider our hardwood flooring installation service instead.
As touched on above, LVP also cannot be refinished. If you do get a big scratch or scuff, you’ll need to remove the entire plank and replace it with a new one.
Will LVP Flooring Installation Decrease My Home’s Value?
The answer to this question depends on the location of your home, as well as what you had installed before, but the simple answer is no—LVP will not decrease your home value. If you’re planning to put your house on the market soon and currently have solid hardwood floors, it may be in your best interest to just refinish them. Hardwood floors do increase a home’s value, so replacing them with LVP right before selling probably isn’t the best move.
On the other hand, if you’re renovating a very old and outdated house that currently has linoleum and shag carpet, LVP isn’t a bad way to go at all. In this situation, installing LVP over your existing floor may even increase your home’s value—just not as much as hardwood would.
